Guardian ★ ★ ★
‘… an unruly and joyful story of making change,
with its eyes as much on the present as the past.’
The Stage ★ ★ ★
‘… lovingly restoring these women’s valuable true story …’
Theatre & Tonic ★ ★ ★ ★
‘This is a wonderful show that will leave you feeling empowered, uplifted, and inspired to make your own positive change in the world. It’s captivating, sincere, and a reminder of how collective action can create real, lasting impact.’
Theatre Weekly ★ ★ ★ ★
‘Hallett [created] a band of characters who are warm, funny and instantly endearing …’
Time Out ★ ★ ★
‘big-hearted new musical … rooted in a brilliant episode of real life. …
The show’s joyful punch-in-the-air defiance of bigotry and its pride in the story it’s telling is uplifting. And that feels important right now.’
The Peg ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
'this is a supremely confident, brilliantly executed show, that grabs you from the first beat and never lets go. It feels like everyone involved in this production believes that it's got the makings of a massive hit in the West End - and they are absolutely right.'
Gwenda's Garage was a real place - a lesbian-run car repair workshop in 1980s Sheffield.
We drew on oral history interviews by Sandra Baker Donnelly with women who had worked at or used the garage, and been involved in feminist campaigns, especially those against Section 28, the Tory government legislation to prevent the 'promotion of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship'.
